Use of Molecular Markers for Evaluation of Genetic Diversity and in Animal Production

چکیده
Department of Animal breeding and Genetics, Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany. INTRODUCTION Genetic markers provide information about allelic variation at a given locus. The increasing availability of molecular markers in farm animals allows the detailed analyses and evaluation of genetic diversity and also, the detection of genes influencing economically important traits. The majority of molecular markers used nowadays with highthrough put systems are microsatellite markers (simple tandem repeat, STR) and amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs). Other types of markers, including variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs), random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), single strand conformation polymorphisms (SSCPs), and restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs), are not commonly applied to farm animals. Additionally, in diversity and phylogeny studies, specific mtDNA and Y chromosome markers are used for the identification of maternal and paternal lineages. Beyond diversity studies, molecular markers are also used for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) and in marker assisted selection (MAS). Until recently, microsatellites were the markers used for mapping quantitative trait loci for production and functional traits in farm animals (Hiendleder et al., 2003; Kühn et al., 2003) and tightly linked markers are used for marker assisted selection in practice. They are also the prerequisite for the identification of positional and functional candidate genes responsible for quantitative traits. In this presentation the detailed use of molecular markers for the evaluation of genetic diversity and identification of economically important traits in animal production is explained using different examples.

Genetic Diversity Evaluation of Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) Ecotypes Using Morphological Traits and Molecular Markers
Genetic diversity of 12 lemon balm ecotypes was evaluated using agronomic traits as well as ISSR and RAPD markers. Results of analysis of variance showed high diversity among the studied ecotypes. Cluster analysis using UPGMA method grouped the ecotypes into three different groups based on the agronomic traits. Twelve ISSR primers created 106 polymorphic bands among the studied ecotypes. An ISS...

متن کاملAssessment of Genetic Diversity between Different Accessions of Calotropis Procera with ISSR Molecular Markers
The present study was performed to classify and study genetic diversity between Calotropis procera accessions from different regions of Kerman province (Iran) using ISSR markers. In total, DNA from 14 plant samples with nine ISSR primers was amplified by PCR and their banding pattern was obtained. The primers showed acceptable polymorphism (35.93) and minimum and maximum polymorphic information...

Objective: Investigation of genetic diversity and population structure of Iranian poppy populations from Alborz Mountains. Methods: Total DNA from 36 genotypes (12 individuals from each population) were extracted by doyle method. Thebaine of capsules were assayed...
متن کاملApplication of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) as a molecular marker in the study of genetic diversity of aquatic populations
Genetic diversity is one of the important and essential characteristics of any population for its survival. The study of genetic variation in different populations of aquatic organisms is of particular importance in order to protect, stabilize and manage their stocks. Based on studies conducted in recent years, molecular markers have proven that they can be used as indicators of the genetic div...
